Unnikrishnan Avala is a prominent Malayalam filmmaker, writer, screenwriter, documentary producer, and educationist. Hailing from Perambra, he is known for his sensitive portrayal of Adivasi-tribal communities, gender diversity, cultural transformation, and socio-political issues, particularly focusing on tribal groups like the Cholanaykkar and Alar. His notable films include Udalazham (2019), depicting the life of a transgender person, and Thanthaper: Life of a Falas, made in the Cholanaykkar language against the backdrop of the Emergency. He has also authored the book Vipareetham, a biography of a transgender individual. At IFFK 2025, Thanthaper won three awards including Best Malayalam Film and Popular Choice, alongside recognition at other national and international film festivals for both feature and documentary work.
